Patient education

Sports physicals.

Sports physicals, also called pre-participation exams, help determine whether an athlete can safely participate in school, club, or recreational sports.

What the visit reviews

A sports physical typically includes medical history, prior injuries, medications, heart and breathing symptoms, family history, vital signs, and a focused exam. The goal is to identify concerns that may need follow-up before participation.

Why sports medicine training helps

A sports medicine physician can also discuss injury prevention, conditioning, return-to-play concerns, and sport-specific risks. This makes the visit more useful than simply completing a form.

What to bring

When to schedule

Schedule before the season deadline, especially if the athlete has a history of concussion, chest symptoms, fainting, asthma, or a recent injury.
